About BRS 236 Cereja

'BRS 236 Cereja' was released in 2003 by Embrapa Agroindustria Tropical as part of the same four-clone acerola series as 'Apodi', 'Roxinha' and 'Frutacor'. Its defining characteristic in the release data is vitamin C: among the four it recorded the highest ascorbic acid content, while also placing second for average fruit production per harvest per plant. That combination of very high vitamin C with good yield makes it the clone of choice where the crop is destined for ascorbic acid extraction or nutraceutical processing rather than fresh market. It is also one of the varieties documented with high concentrations of cyanidin-3-rhamnoside, the main phenolic compound in acerola fruit. The name cereja is simply Portuguese for cherry, reflecting the fruit's appearance.
