About BRS 237 Roxinha

'BRS 237 Roxinha' is the smallest-framed of the four acerola clones Embrapa Agroindustria Tropical released in 2003, and it is the one Brazilian researchers single out, together with 'Olivier', as most suitable for fresh consumption rather than industrial processing. Its Portuguese name, meaning little purple one, refers to the deep colour of the ripe fruit, and it is among the clones documented with high concentrations of cyanidin-3-rhamnoside, the dominant anthocyanin in acerola. Its compact stature makes it the most manageable of the group in a home orchard setting. In the Alta Paulista clone trials in Sao Paulo state it was assessed alongside 'Apodi', 'Cereja', 'Frutacor', 'Olivier', 'Okinawa' and 'Waldy CATI 30', with the fresh-market recommendation going to 'Olivier' and 'Roxinha'. It is a good example of the Embrapa programme deliberately releasing clones for different market segments rather than one all-purpose variety.
