About BRS 366 Jaburu

'BRS 366 Jaburu' is a later Embrapa Agroindustria Tropical acerola release, named for the Jaburu locality in the municipality of Ubajara, Ceara, where it was first trialled, and developed in partnership with a food-supplement manufacturer. It was bred squarely for industrial vitamin C production: the fruit is harvested green, when ascorbic acid concentration is roughly double what it is at full ripeness. Its practical advantages over earlier clones are early bearing, seven productive cycles spread across the year rather than a few concentrated flushes, and a low incidence of pests and diseases. Uniquely among acerolas it has leaves with very few of the irritant hairs that normally cause skin reactions in pickers, which makes hand harvesting far more tolerable, and it also suits mechanical harvest. It has been promoted by Embrapa specifically for organic and family-farm production.
