About C. F. Rehnborg
'C. F. Rehnborg' is a Hawaiian acerola clone raised from Miami seed germinated in Hawaii and named for Carl F. Rehnborg, the food-supplement pioneer whose interest in acerola as a natural vitamin C source helped drive commercial planting of the crop in the 1950s. It is conserved as accession HMAL 6 in the USDA-ARS Malpighia collection at Hilo. In the Hawaiian evaluations it stood out for high productivity and unusually large, dark red fruit, but tested lower in ascorbic acid than the smaller-fruited acid clones, which is the classic trade-off in this species. It belongs to the sour group that, together with 'J. H. Beaumont' and 'F. Haley', was found better adapted to the drier leeward districts. It is a historically significant selection that is now mostly a germplasm and collector's cultivar.
