About F. Haley

'F. Haley' is a Hawaiian acerola clone grown from Miami seed and named for the late Frederick Haley Sr., credited as the first person to bring acerola into Hawaii in quantity for commercial purposes. It is conserved as accession HMAL 5 in the USDA-ARS Malpighia collection at Hilo. Its documented distinction is adaptation to arid conditions, and it is grouped with 'J. H. Beaumont' and 'C. F. Rehnborg' as the sour clones that perform better in the drier districts than the sweet selections do. Fruit is medium sized and unusually dark, tending toward red-purple rather than the bright scarlet of most acerolas. Like the other Hawaiian named clones it is now largely a germplasm and rare-fruit cultivar rather than a commercial one.
