About Maunawili
'Maunawili' is a Hawaiian acerola selection named for the Maunawili valley on windward Oahu and conserved as accession HMAL 4 in the USDA-ARS Malpighia collection at Hilo. Its distinguishing trait in the Hawaiian literature is site adaptation rather than fruit quality: it is described as a superior performer specifically in areas of high rainfall, where several of the other named clones perform poorly. That makes it the clone of interest for wet tropical and windward sites, in the same way that 'J. H. Beaumont', 'C. F. Rehnborg' and 'F. Haley' are the ones recommended for drier leeward ground. It is listed in the California Rare Fruit Growers cultivar roster but is rarely offered commercially outside Hawaii. Detailed fruit and yield data for the clone has not been widely published.
