About Aromatto

Aromatto is catalogued by Johnny's under ornamental basil rather than culinary basil, and the reason is stem length: they call it the tallest cut-flower basil in their trials at 20-24 in. It is genuinely Ocimum basilicum, but it does not behave like a Genovese in the garden — purple stems, glossy purple-and-green bicolour foliage, and dark purple flower bracts make the whole plant a bouquet component rather than a leaf crop. Johnny's puts its aroma close to cinnamon basil and its taste spicy but sweeter than Genovese types, which is why it turns up in cut-flower catalogues like Floret alongside the herb listings. Growers reach for it when they want a fragrant, structural filler that also happens to be edible, and it is available as certified organic seed.
