About Evi
Evi is a Genovese basil from Enza Zaden aimed squarely at commercial herb growers, and its reason for existing is disease: the breeder lists it with IR Pb, an intermediate rating against basil downy mildew, the disease that made sweet basil unreliable across much of North America and Europe from the late 2000s onwards. Alongside that rating it carries good bolt tolerance, so it holds leaf quality longer under heat and lengthening days than an unimproved Genovese. Enza positions it as dual-purpose across open-field beds and controlled-environment agriculture, which is unusual for a herb variety and reflects intermediate internode spacing that works in both a field row and a hydroponic gutter. It is also offered as certified organic seed through Vitalis, Enza Zaden's organic division, making it one of the few downy-mildew-rated Genovese options available to organic growers. It is a production variety, not a novelty, and its case rests on holding a clean crop rather than on any unusual flavour or appearance.
