About Ghana Akokomesa

Akokomesa, also sold as Akoko Mesa, is a Ghanaian household basil rather than a Mediterranean one, and it is best understood as a West African culinary staple that recently crossed into North American seed catalogues. Singapore's NParks Flora and Fauna Web lists it formally as Ocimum basilicum 'Akoko Mesa', describing a compact herbaceous annual with elliptic leaves and small white flowers whorled along racemes. The cultivar name is usually glossed as chicken dance, a reference to its role seasoning poultry; Ghanaian seed seller Call To Nature Heirloom Seeds describes it as a native herb grown in home gardens across the country for both cooking and traditional medicine, and it is associated with dishes such as chicken groundnut soup. Baker Creek introduced it to the US market, and community gardens like the Poughkeepsie Farm Project have grown it for culturally significant herb plots. Published horticultural data on it remains thin compared with commercial Western basils, so growers are working from cultural knowledge more than trial figures.
