About Boston
Boston is Tozer Seeds' selection out of the Boltardy line, the benchmark British beetroot for early spring sowing. Boltardy types were selected to require a longer cold period before they will run to seed, and Boston inherits that trait: Tozer describes it as slow bolting and suited to an early crop, and UK retailers report very few bolters from the earliest sowings. The refinements over the parent are uniformity and finish, giving round, notably smooth-skinned roots with strong internal colour. Growers also note comparatively sparse foliage, which trims faster and puts more of the plant into the root on an early crop. The RHS lists it as a deep-red taproot variety rated H3 for hardiness, sown direct between March and July. Its niche is the early slot rather than long winter storage.
