Zeppo

Zeppo is an F1 round red beet sold in North America by Johnny's Selected Seeds and Territorial Seed, and internationally under the breeder designation Zeppo RZ. Johnny's calls it their most refined beet and states it is more uniform with higher yield potential than Red Ace, the hybrid that has been the commercial benchmark for decades. The selection work clearly went into the root's finish as much as its eating quality: Johnny's lists smooth skin, a genuinely round shape, minimal root hairs and a very fine taproot, which is exactly what a market grower needs when roots are washed and bunched. Territorial rates it among the most consistently round and uniform beets available and describes the interior as minimally zoned. It is deliberately dual-purpose — pulled at 40 days it is a baby beet, left to 50 it is a full-size root — and Territorial notes it is compact enough for containers.
