About Appalachia

Appalachia is a forestry selection of black locust evaluated for straight stems and usable timber. In an Austrian BFW trial at Riedenthal, planted with two-year-old trees at 2 x 2 m spacing, Appalachia was among the three cultivars judged best suited to quality timber production at a plantation age of 17 years. Across that group, 40-55% of stems were straight, rising to 60-70% usable for sawn-wood applications when slightly curved stems were included; these are group ranges, not an Appalachia-specific percentage. At plantation age eight, the trial table recorded Appalachia at 9.4 m height and 8.4 cm breast-height diameter. These are site-specific trial measurements, not mature dimensions or a guaranteed harvest schedule. Black locust can spread invasively outside its native range, so planting requires attention to local ecological conditions.
