About Lisa

Lisa is a Nicaraguan red-fleshed cultivar, one of five types grown commercially in that country, and it entered California through UC Cooperative Extension's San Diego pitahaya variety trial. It is usually catalogued as Hylocereus polyrhizus, though some sources place it under H. monacanthus. UC recorded 465 g fruit at 17.02 Brix with quality better than average, and rated its tolerance of both cold and heat above average and its commercial potential excellent — one of the strongest overall ratings in the twenty-cultivar trial. Its distinguishing feature in the field is a powdery natural wax bloom on the skin, called pruina, which protects the fruit from summer sunburn. It is self-sterile and needs cross-pollination to set.
