About Wyldewood 2
'Wyldewood 2' is an American elderberry accession developed at Wyldewood Cellars — an elderberry farm, nursery and winery in Mulvane, Kansas — in partnership with Kansas State University and the University of Missouri. It should not be confused with the University of Missouri's 2010 release 'Wyldewood', a different plant: that cultivar was collected from the wild near Brush Hill, Oklahoma in 1995, carried the working designations 'Brush Hills 1' and 'Wyldewood 1', and was simply named in honor of the same Kansas winery. The Experimental Farm Network, who acquired cuttings of several elderberry selections at a 2017 conference and grew them out in southern New Jersey, rate 'Wyldewood 2' the most vigorous and productive of that set once established, with a bumper crop recorded in 2020. EFN also class it explicitly as a breeding population rather than a stabilized cultivar, which is the single most important thing a grower needs to know about it.
