About Smyrna

Smyrna is a fig type that requires cross-pollination by caprifigs to develop normally and depends entirely on the fig wasp (Blastophaga psenes) for fruit development, producing no breba crop. The best-known cultivar of the Smyrna type is Calimyrna, brought to California from Turkey in the late 19th century. Fruit tends to be large, seedy, and richly flavored.
