About Big Kahuna
Big Kahuna is a large-rhizome culinary ginger distributed as certified organic seed by Hawaii Clean Seed in Hawaii, and it became the workhorse variety for the first wave of northern United States baby-ginger growers after 2010. It is named for the size of the hands it produces, and the practical consequence is that a pound of seed yields fewer plantable pieces than other varieties, so growers have to recalculate their seed rates rather than assume a standard count. Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners documented a Vermont trial at Freedom Farm that received Big Kahuna seed in mid-March and grew it out under season extension, while Cornell Small Farms discussed it as the reference variety against which the faster-sprouting selection Ruhi was later compared. Because it sizes up into big, heavy hands, it suits growers selling mature or lightly cured ginger by weight, and it remains one of the few edible ginger clones a North American home grower can buy under an actual cultivar name.
