About Himgiri
Himgiri is a ginger released by Dr Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry at Nauni, Solan, in Himachal Pradesh, and it is the principal improved variety aimed at India's northern hill ginger belt rather than the humid south. Himachal Pradesh grows ginger under mid-hill conditions with a shorter, cooler season than Kerala or Odisha, and Himgiri was selected to perform there rather than to compete on raw tonnage. Yields are correspondingly modest at about 13.5 tonnes per hectare, with dry recovery around 20.6% and oleoresin near 4.3%. It appears routinely as a check variety in Indian genetic variability and divergence studies on ginger, which is a good sign of how established it is. For growers outside the tropics it is one of very few named gingers with a documented track record in a cool hill climate.
