About IISR Mahima
IISR Mahima was released in 2001 by the ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research at Calicut, alongside its sister release IISR Rejatha, both selected out of the institute's germplasm collection and formally described in the Journal of Spices and Aromatic Crops. Where Rejatha was pushed toward aroma and oleoresin, Mahima was released on the strength of two other traits: bold rhizomes and resistance to root-knot nematode, which is the reason to choose it on land with a nematode history. It carries the lowest crude fibre of the pair at 3.26%, which matters for both fresh eating and dry-ginger grade, paired with 4.48% oleoresin and 1.72% essential oil. Average fresh yield is 23.2 tonnes per hectare over a 200-day season, and it has been adopted mainly in Kerala.
