Lemon Gold

'Lemon Gold' is an Australian selection included in the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden jackfruit evaluation, and its distinguishing feature is colour: the flesh is a clear lemon yellow rather than the deep orange of most improved cultivars, which makes it instantly recognisable on a cut fruit. The arils are firm with a sweet, aromatic flavour, and the fruit is medium-small and blocky at around 13 lb, a practical size for a household. It is the lightest cropper in the evaluated group at 66 to 100 lb per tree per year, and the tree is moderately dense and spreading with moderate vigour, needing annual pruning to stay around 12 ft. It was not on the final short list UF/IFAS singled out for commercial planting, but it remains a legitimate documented cultivar of interest to collectors and anyone wanting flesh-colour variety in a home planting.
