About Leafflower
Phyllanthus is a large genus of flowering plants in the family Phyllanthaceae, with estimates of the number of species ranging from 750 to 1200. The genus has a diverse range of growth forms, including annual and perennial herbs, shrubs, climbers, floating aquatics, and succulents. They are found in all tropical and subtropical regions on Earth. The name "Leafflower" is a common name for the genus, alluding to the appearance of flowers on the leaf-like stems of some species. Key characteristics of the genus include a specific type of growth called "phyllanthoid branching," where vertical stems bear deciduous, flower-bearing, horizontal or oblique stems. The leaves on the main vertical axes are reduced to scales, while leaves on the other axes develop normally. The genus also has a wide variety of floral morphologies, chromosome numbers, and pollen types. Many species in the genus have a long history of use in traditional medicine. For example, Phyllanthus emblica, also known as Indian gooseberry or amla, is used in Ayurvedic medicine. Phyllanthus niruri has been traditionally used for jaundice, gonorrhea, frequent menstruation, and diabetes. Some species are also used as a poultice for skin ulcers, sores, swelling, and itchiness. The young shoots of some plants are used in an infusion to treat chronic dysentery. Research has also shown that some species have pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties.
