Lily of the Nile

Agapanthus africanus

Agapanthus, commonly known as the Lily of the Nile or African Lily, is a genus of flowering plants native to Southern Africa. The name is derived from the Greek words "agape," meaning love, and "anthos," meaning flower. Despite their common names, these plants are not true lilies. The genus includes both evergreen and deciduous species, all of which are admired for their exotic and beautiful blooms. These herbaceous perennials grow from thick, fleshy rhizomes. They produce clumps of long, strap-like, leathery leaves that can be an attractive feature even when the plant is not in bloom. In the summer, tall, sturdy stalks, or scapes, rise above the foliage, bearing large, rounded clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers. The flowers are most commonly seen in shades of blue, purple, and white, often with a darker stripe running down the center of each petal. Numerous cultivars have been developed to produce a wider range of colors and sizes, from dwarf varieties to those with flower stalks reaching up to six feet tall. Agapanthus is a popular choice for ornamental use in gardens and containers around the world. Their tolerance for drought and resistance to deer make them a low-maintenance option for many landscapes. In their native regions, they have a history of use in traditional medicine. However, it is important to note that some species have become invasive in certain areas outside of their native range. The sap of the plant can also cause skin irritation in some individuals.Read more
