Lara

Lara is the eponymous selection of Pablo Lara, the South Florida grower behind several of the state's mamey cultivars, and it is one of the five UF/IFAS recommends for home landscapes. It earns that on quality: the flavour rating in the UF/IFAS cultivar table is flagged as emphatically excellent, and the pulp is red rather than pink or salmon. It also carries an emphasised rating for cold tolerance, which is unusual and useful for gardeners at the cool margin of mamey country. Its August-September ripening extends the season past Pantin, making it a natural partner for the summer cultivars in a mixed dooryard planting. The cultivar is maintained in the USDA/ARS National Germplasm Repository collection in Miami.
