About Skinner

Skinner is a tropical long-fruited mulberry collected in Trinidad from a Dr. Skinner, and it reached Florida cultivation by an unusually traceable route: the plantsman Crafton Clift told Cody Cove Farm about the fruit, and the nursery went to Miami to take budwood from what was then the only known tree in the United States. Sow Exotic now lists it as Morus macroura var. Skinner. Its fruit is among the longest of any mulberry, with berries truly reaching five inches, and the flavour is unlike the mulberry norm: fig-like, low in acid, sweet and rich rather than bright. The tree is extraordinarily productive, setting clusters of fruit from every node, and grafts are so precocious that they crop almost immediately. It also tolerates hard pruning and can be kept as a compact fruiting bush, which is rare for a mulberry of this fruit size.
