Tehama

Tehama, also catalogued as Giant White, is a Morus alba selection made in Tehama County, California, and it is the standard by which large white mulberries are measured. Where most white mulberries produce small, insipid fruit that is chiefly of interest to birds and chickens, Tehama produces berries the size of a good blackberry with a melting, almost liquid texture and a pronounced honey sweetness. California Rare Fruit Growers singles it out for very sweet, succulent, almost melting flesh on an attractive large-leaved tree. The fruit is effectively seedless and low in acid, which makes it the mulberry of choice for drying into mulberry raisins as well as for fresh eating. It is scarce in the trade and commands a premium price when it does appear, though Sow Exotic has carried it in Florida and California nurseries offer it periodically.
