About Byrd

Byrd is the first cultivar released from the pecan breeding program initiated in 1989 by UGA professor Darrell Sparks. It was selected from a cross of Pawnee x Wichita and is one of the very few cultivars with a large size and a very early harvest date, usually ripening in mid-late September, about a week after Pawnee. In Georgia trials it averaged 50 nuts per pound and 59 percent kernel, with a scab rating of 2 and a harvest date of September 22.
