About Rowan

_Sorbus_ is a genus of over 100 species of trees and shrubs in the rose family, Rosaceae. Commonly known as rowan or mountain-ash, these plants are native to the cool-temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. While the leaves of some species resemble those of true ash trees (_Fraxinus_), _Sorbus_ is not closely related and belongs to the same family as apples and roses. The key characteristics of the genus include pinnate (compound) leaves, clusters of white flowers, and vibrant berries that can be red, orange, or pink. These berries, technically pomes, are a favorite food source for many bird species, which in turn help to disperse the seeds. The trees are typically small to medium-sized, with smooth, grayish bark that becomes more fissured with age. They are hardy and adaptable, often found in a variety of habitats from woodlands to rocky hillsides. Rowans have a rich history of cultural significance and are featured in folklore and mythology in many parts of Europe. The wood has been traditionally used for carving and making tools, while the berries, though astringent, can be cooked and made into jellies, jams, and alcoholic beverages. In modern times, they are widely cultivated as ornamental trees in parks and gardens, prized for their beautiful spring blossoms, attractive foliage, and colorful autumn fruit.
