About PKM-1
PKM-1 is a dwarf sapota released in 1981 by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University's Horticultural Research Station at Periyakulam, selected clonally from the traditional cultivar Guthi. It is one of the few genuinely dwarf sapodillas to come out of a formal breeding programme, and its compact stature makes it suited to closer planting and easier harvesting than standard orchard cultivars. Fruit averages around 100 grams with a thin skin and buttery, very sweet pulp, and reported yields are exceptional for the tree size at roughly 236 kilograms per tree per year. It has since served as breeding stock in its own right: PKM(Sa).4, released in 2003, is an open-pollinated clonal selection from PKM-1. For growers in tropical climates who want a productive but small sapota, it is the best-documented option from the Indian releases.
