Snake Plant
Dracaena trifasciata 'Laurentii'
Sansevieria, most commonly known as the Snake Plant, is a genus of flowering plants native to tropical West Africa, Madagascar, and southern Asia. Until 2017, it was recognized as its own genus, but has since been reclassified into the Dracaena genus based on molecular discoveries. Despite the scientific name change, the name Sansevieria and its common names, including Mother-in-Law's Tongue and Viper's Bowstring Hemp, remain widely used. These plants are renowned for their hardiness and adaptability, making them a popular choice for houseplants, especially for beginners. The most striking feature of the Snake Plant is its foliage. The leaves are typically stiff, sword-shaped, and grow vertically from a basal rosette. They are often variegated with different shades of green, and some cultivars have yellow or white edges. The plant spreads through a creeping rhizome, which can be either above or below ground. Sansevieria is highly tolerant of low light conditions and infrequent watering, making it an exceptionally low-maintenance houseplant. This drought tolerance is due to its use of the crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) process for photosynthesis, which allows it to exchange gases at night to minimize water loss. Beyond its ornamental value, the Snake Plant is also recognized for its practical and cultural significance. Historically, the strong fibers of the plant were used to make bowstrings, which is the origin of the name "Viper's Bowstring Hemp". More recently, it was included in the NASA Clean Air Study, which found it has the potential to filter indoor air. In some cultures, the plant is believed to have protective qualities and is used in rituals or placed near homes to ward off evil. For example, in Brazil, it is known as "espada de São Jorge" (Saint George's sword) and is associated with the orisha Ogum, who is syncretized with Saint George.Read more
