About South Anna

South Anna Butternut is Edmund Frost's answer to downy mildew, the disease that routinely wrecks cucurbit crops in the humid Southeast. He made the cross in 2011 between Seminole Pumpkin and Waltham Butternut and has selected the population for more than twelve years at Common Wealth Seed Growers, working simultaneously on downy mildew resistance, eating quality, keeping quality, productivity and butternut shape. The result borrows the Seminole parent's field toughness while keeping a silhouette that a market customer recognises — Frost reports roughly 95% of fruits coming true to butternut shape at the F8 generation. Seed is certified organic and pledged to the Open Source Seed Initiative. The practical argument for growing it is blunt: in years when downy mildew arrives early it avoids the crop failure that takes out conventional butternuts, and in average years it simply returns higher, cleaner yields.
