About Gitit
'Gitit' is one of the very few Surinam cherries ever released as a formally described cultivar in the horticultural literature: E. Lahav and E. Slor published it in the Fruit Varieties Journal in 1997 under the title "'Gitit', a new Surinam cherry cultivar". Israel has quietly worked with Eugenia uniflora for decades — Israeli yield figures for the species appear in the standard references, including one untrimmed tree that produced 2,700 fruits weighing about 24 lb in a single year — and 'Gitit' came out of that work. University of Hawai'i CTAHR literature on the crop lists it as an Israeli cultivar that remained untested in Hawai'i, alongside three promising cultivars identified by a Brazilian breeding programme in 1996. It has never entered the US nursery trade and is effectively unobtainable to home growers in North America, so it is included here as a documented cultivar rather than a shopping recommendation. Its existence is a useful reminder that named Surinam cherry cultivars do exist outside the Florida-Hawai'i trade circuit.
