About Sá
Sá is a Nicotiana rustica from San Juan Pueblo in northern New Mexico, held in the Native Seeds/SEARCH seed bank at a high-desert provenance of roughly 5,000 feet. The name itself is the Tewa word recorded with the accession, and NS/S notes that it was traditionally grown by elders in small secluded patches rather than as a field crop, with the leaves used ceremonially. That cultivation pattern is the distinguishing fact about it: unlike the market-oriented punche strains, Sá was never a barter or trade tobacco, and its scale was deliberately private. NS/S describes small tubular yellow flowers, the compact rustica bloom form. Seed is not sold; the accession is available only through the organisation's Native American Seed Share, so this is a conservation record rather than a garden variety.
