Lara

Lara is a French-bred English walnut cultivar valued for its precocity, heavy lateral bearing, and large, attractive nuts. It comes into production quickly and yields well, producing big, well-sealed, light-shelled nuts with high-quality light kernels. Lara leafs out early to mid-season, so it is better suited to regions with low spring-frost risk, and it benefits from a pollinizer such as Franquette. Popular in France and increasingly grown elsewhere, it combines the early cropping and heavy yields that home and commercial growers seek. Its large showy nuts and reliable production make Lara a good choice for orchards and permaculture plantings in mild climates where its earlier leafing is not a frost liability.
