About Northern

'Northern' is not a nursery cultivar but a regional landrace seed strain assembled and offered by the Experimental Farm Network, and the selection pressure behind it is climate rather than a breeder's eye. Seed is collected from Adam's needle growing at EFN's flagship farm in Elmer, New Jersey, blended with seed foraged from a naturalized colony in Massachusetts, so every parent plant has already proven it can overwinter well north of the species' native Southeastern coastal range. EFN reports the strain as cold hardy to roughly Zone 4, with winter protection advised at the cold margin. Gardeners reach for it when they want northern-adapted provenance for a yucca planted as a multi-use plant — cordage and basketry fiber from the leaves, pickled flower buds from the bloom stalk, and saponin-rich roots for soap — rather than for a variegated ornamental clone like 'Color Guard' or 'Bright Edge'. Because it is sold as a landrace, seedlings vary and the population is meant to keep adapting in the grower's own conditions.
