About UEL 3 Dominga
'UEL 3 Dominga' is the first of the three acerola cultivars released in 2002 by Universidade Estadual de Londrina in Parana, Brazil, from a programme started in 1992 that evaluated 31 clonally propagated genotypes gathered from commercial orchards in Parana and Sao Paulo. Compared with its siblings 'Ligia' and 'Natalia' it has the smallest fruit but the highest sugar content and the lowest acidity, giving it the mildest flavour balance of the three. Its vitamin C is still very high by any standard, at about 2,906 mg per 100 g unripe and 1,250 mg per 100 g ripe. Like the rest of the UEL series it was aimed at the processing market, supplying juices, preserves and nutraceutical products, and it is recommended for northern Parana and climatically similar subtropical regions. It is a useful reference point for how much sugar-acid variation exists within a single acerola breeding population.
