About Barbados Cherry

Malpighia is a genus of flowering plants in the nance family, Malpighiaceae, commonly known as Barbados Cherry or Acerola. Native to the American tropics, this genus comprises about 45 species of shrubs and small trees. The most prominent species, Malpighia emarginata and Malpighia glabra, are widely cultivated for their fruit. The plants are characterized by their dense, evergreen foliage and produce attractive pink to red blossoms. The fruit, which closely resembles a true cherry, is a bright red drupe with a juicy, tart flavor. These plants typically grow to a height of 3-6 meters and are well-suited to warm climates, thriving in full sun and well-drained soil. The primary significance of the Barbados Cherry lies in its exceptionally high vitamin C content, which can be 50-100 times that of an orange. This makes it a valuable superfruit, consumed fresh, juiced, or processed into jams, jellies, and supplements. Beyond its nutritional value, it is also used in traditional medicine and is a popular ornamental plant in subtropical and tropical regions, valued for its attractive flowers and fruit.
