About Green cardamom

Elettaria cardamomum, commonly known as green cardamom or true cardamom, is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). Native to the tropical rainforests of southern India, it is one of the world's oldest and most valued spices, often referred to as the "Queen of Spices." The plant has been traded for over a millennium and remains one of the most expensive spices by weight, third only to saffron and vanilla. While originally from India, it is now cultivated in other tropical regions, with Guatemala having become the largest producer since the 1980s. The cardamom plant is characterized by its impressive height, reaching between 6 and 15 feet. It grows from thick, fleshy rhizomes and produces leafy shoots with long, lance-shaped, fragrant leaves that can be up to two feet in length. The flowers, which are white to lilac or pale violet with pink or yellow margins, bloom in loose panicles. The fruit of the plant is a thin-walled, smooth-skinned, yellowish-green pod, about three-quarters of an inch long, which contains 15-20 aromatic, black to reddish-brown seeds. Cardamom thrives in hot, humid conditions with plenty of rainfall and shade, typical of its native monsoon forest habitat. The primary use of cardamom is as a culinary spice. The aromatic seeds are used whole or ground to flavor a wide variety of dishes, from savory curries in Indian and Asian cuisines to baked goods in Scandinavia and coffee and tea in the Middle East. Beyond its culinary applications, cardamom has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurveda, for treating digestive issues, respiratory problems, and other ailments. The essential oil extracted from the seeds is also utilized in the perfume and cosmetic industries for its distinct fragrance.
