About Murta
Murta is a jaboticaba cultivar of Plinia cauliflora (formerly Myrciaria cauliflora). It was the only one of the plants Dr. W. Hentz planted in Florida to survive, and he moved it to Winter Haven in 1918, where it began fruiting in 1932 and continued to bear in great abundance. In 1904, three jaboticaba varieties, Murta, Coroa and Paulista, were planted in Santa Barbara, California. The fruit is eaten raw and is also used in jams and desserts.
