About Jiaogulan (southern ginseng)

Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum), also known as Southern Ginseng, is a perennial climbing vine belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family, which also includes cucumbers and melons. Native to Southern China and other parts of Asia, it is a celebrated herb in traditional Chinese medicine, often referred to as "miracle grass" or the "herb of immortality." While there are other species in the Gynostemma genus, Jiaogulan is the most prominent and widely recognized, valued for its sweet-tasting leaves which are brewed into an herbal tea. This herbaceous vine is characterized by its slender stems and tendrils that allow it to climb and spread. Its leaves are typically palmately compound, with five serrated leaflets, giving it the name pentaphyllum (five leaves). The plant is dioecious, meaning individual plants are either male or female, requiring both for seed production. It produces small, purple, inedible gourds. Jiaogulan is relatively easy to cultivate in temperate climates, preferring well-drained soil and full sun, though it is not frost-tolerant and is best grown as a perennial in USDA zone 8 or warmer, or as an annual in colder regions. Jiaogulan has a rich history of use in folk medicine for its purported health benefits, which are attributed to its high concentration of saponins called gypenosides, similar to the ginsenosides found in ginseng. It is considered an adaptogen, believed to help the body resist and adapt to stress. Traditionally, it has been used to combat fatigue, treat respiratory ailments like bronchitis, and as a general health tonic. Modern research has explored its potential benefits for cardiovascular health, including supporting healthy cholesterol levels and blood pressure, as well as its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also used to support metabolic health and is being investigated for its potential anti-diabetic effects. In contemporary use, Jiaogulan is most commonly consumed as a caffeine-free herbal tea. It is also available in the form of extracts, capsules, and dietary supplements. While it has been used for centuries in Asia, it has gained global recognition more recently as interest in traditional and herbal remedies has grown. In the European Union, it is classified as a novel food. Despite its long history of use, further clinical research is needed to substantiate many of its claimed health benefits.
