About Jungle geranium
Ixora is a genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae, which includes other well-known plants like coffee and gardenia. This genus comprises around 544 species of tropical evergreen trees and shrubs, with its center of diversity in Tropical Asia. Commonly known as Jungle Geranium or Flame of the Woods, Ixora is a popular ornamental plant in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, including Florida where it is often called West Indian Jasmine. The name Ixora is derived from Iswara, a name for the Hindu deity Shiva, as the flowers were traditionally offered in temples. Ixora plants are characterized by their glossy, leathery, dark green leaves that are typically oval-shaped and grow opposite each other on the stems. The leaves can range from 3 to 6 inches in length. The most striking feature of Ixora is its large, dense clusters of small, tubular, four-petaled flowers that bloom in corymbose cymes. These flower clusters can be up to 5 inches wide and come in a vibrant array of colors, including red, orange, yellow, and pink. While the primary blooming season is in the summer, Ixora can produce flowers sporadically throughout the year in tropical climates. The flowers are followed by small, round, dark purple to black berries. Ixora is widely cultivated for its ornamental value and is often used as a hedge, foundation plant, or screen. Its dense growth habit and positive response to pruning make it an excellent choice for creating low hedges. In regions where it is not winter-hardy, Ixora can be grown in containers and brought indoors during colder months. Beyond its ornamental uses, Ixora holds cultural and medicinal significance. In Hindu traditions, the flowers are used in religious ceremonies. The plant also has a place in Ayurvedic and Indian folk medicine. While generally low-maintenance, Ixora requires acidic soil to thrive and can develop chlorosis (yellowing of leaves) in alkaline conditions.
