Pakistan is the long-fruited mulberry that made the species a novelty crop in the American nursery trade, and it belongs to Morus macroura rather than to the familiar alba, rubra or nigra. Selected from the Pakistani material long grown across the northern subcontinent, it has been distributed in the United States since the 1980s and is now offered by Dave Wilson Nursery, One Green World, Raintree, Burnt Ridge and, in Florida, by Sow Exotic. Its calling card is fruit three to five inches long hanging like red-purple caterpillars from every node, which reliably stops garden visitors mid-conversation. The flesh is firmer than most mulberries and the juice is comparatively non-staining, which makes it far more practical as a dooryard tree than the classic alba types. It is a warm-climate cultivar, best in Zones 7 through 10, and is one of the two or three mulberries most often recommended for central and south Florida.
