About Extra Sweet
'Extra Sweet' is a Florida natal plum selection that was promoted in the state in the early 1960s, according to the standard account of the crop in Fruits of Warm Climates. It belongs to the brief period when Florida nurseries were actively marketing natal plum as a dooryard fruit rather than purely as a thorny hedge, before the ornamental dwarf clones took over the trade. The name signals what it was sold on, but no measured sugar data, fruit description or yield record for it appears in the published literature, and it does not appear to have persisted in commerce. It is documented here as a real historical cultivar name for completeness; a grower today is far more likely to find 'Gifford' or one of the landscape clones.
