With over 1,600 species, it is one of the largest genera of flowering plants, distributed across the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. These plants are typically small understory trees or shrubs found in the rainforests of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The genus is characterized by its opposite leaves, which are often leathery and have prominent veins, and its small, often white or greenish flowers that are borne in terminal or axillary clusters. The fruits are typically fleshy drupes that ripen to red, orange, or black, and each fruit usually contains two seeds. Several species of Psychotria have a long history of use in traditional medicine and cultural practices. The most well-known of these is Psychotria viridis, a key ingredient in the psychedelic brew ayahuasca, which is used in spiritual ceremonies by indigenous peoples of the Amazon basin. This species contains the psychoactive compound dimethyltryptamine (DMT). Other species have been used to treat a variety of ailments, including respiratory infections, digestive problems, and skin conditions. The genus is also of interest to scientists for its chemical diversity, with many species producing a wide range of alkaloids and other secondary metabolites. In a permaculture or garden setting, Psychotria species can be valuable as understory plants in food forests and agroforestry systems. They are adapted to low light conditions and can thrive in the shade of larger trees. Their dense foliage can provide habitat for beneficial insects and other wildlife, and their flowers are a source of nectar for pollinators. Some species are also grown as ornamentals for their attractive foliage and colorful fruits. While specific cultivation requirements vary depending on the species and local conditions, most Psychotria plants prefer a humid environment, well-drained soil, and protection from direct sunlight.
