About Big Red

Big Red is a mayhaw cultivar rated by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension for good size and color, ripening in late April to early May with early March bloom. Fruit is red, about 0.5 to 1 inch in diameter, with firm texture. Trees are hardy in USDA zones 6 to 10 and are partially self-fertile, typically beginning to bear fruit in 6 to 8 years.
