The pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a tropical herbaceous perennial and the most economically significant member of the Bromeliaceae family. Native to South America, particularly the region between southern Brazil and Paraguay, it has been cultivated for centuries. The plant was introduced to Europe in the 17th century after being encountered by Christopher Columbus, and it quickly became a symbol of luxury and hospitality. Today, pineapples are one of the world's most popular tropical fruits, grown commercially in tropical regions across the globe and as an ornamental houseplant in cooler climates. The pineapple plant typically grows to a height and spread of 3 to 4 feet. It features a short, stocky stem with a rosette of tough, waxy, sword-shaped leaves that are often spiny or have saw-toothed edges. The plant produces a terminal inflorescence of numerous small, purple or red flowers that fuse together to form a multiple fruit. This composite fruit, the familiar pineapple, is topped by a crown of leaves. A unique characteristic of the pineapple is its use of Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) photosynthesis, which allows it to fix carbon dioxide at night, minimizing water loss in hot, dry climates. Beyond its culinary appeal, the pineapple holds cultural and practical significance. The fruit is a versatile ingredient, enjoyed fresh, juiced, and in a wide array of sweet and savory dishes. It contains the enzyme bromelain, which is used as a meat tenderizer and has been studied for its potential medicinal properties. The tough leaves of some varieties are a source of high-quality textile fiber known as piña. While commercial cultivation is a major industry, pineapples can also be propagated at home from the crown of the fruit, slips, or suckers, making them a popular and rewarding plant for home gardeners.
